ABOUT
THE BUILDER
Founded by Doug Selby, Volta Homes is a sustainable development company based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. With a BS in chemistry from Michigan State University, Doug transitioned from a career in the medical sciences to woodworking, and eventually to high-performance homebuilding. In 2004, he co-founded Meadowlark Design+Build, where his commitment to thoughtful design and fine craftsmanship took root.
Over his 25-year building career, Doug has focused on creating homes that are not only beautiful, but also exceptionally energy-efficient and healthy. As a Certified Passive House Consultant and experienced building scientist, he brings deep expertise in HVAC systems, advanced construction techniques and green materials — driving Volta’s mission to redefine what sustainable building can be.
THE PROJECT
After retiring from day-to-day operations at Meadowlark, Doug made a personal commitment to build future projects as close to zero-energy as is practical for each project. The Bridge is the result of 25 years of experience in designing and building efficient and healthy homes — a project that pushes the limits all the way to zero energy and beyond.
Designed to generate more energy than it consumes, The Bridge will be one of the most sustainable buildings in the world. With thoughtful engineering, next-generation systems, and materials chosen for both performance and low environmental impact, this project sets a new standard for what residential living can be.
The Bridge is designed to be Michigan’s first PHIUS-Zero Passive multifamily building, and the first to receive both Passive House and Living Building Challenge certifications in the entire world.
